TuneUp - Fix Your Music Collection Automagically

Submitted by on 4 February 2008 – 12:15One Comment

8Now its time to fire up iTunes and see how TuneUp really works.  The first time you use TuneUp, you will have to fill out the registration form.  This part is very important so fill it out correctly.  TuneUp will use your geographical location to provide you with concert information for artists in your music library.  Required fields include: email address with confirmation, password, city, state, and country with date of birth and gender being optional.

Once you have filled out the registration form, click on ‘Start Program’.  You will now find TuneUp located on the right side of iTunes.  Lets see how well this program works.

Album Art-  As you can see in the image, the majority of my music collection has no cover art.  This makes it just a little more difficult to navigate through the library to find the song or album that I am looking for.  TuneUp scans the music library and finds the correct cover art for each album.  Once you see the correct artwork on the TuneUp side bar, you click save and it will always appear with your music.  The process takes just a second or two per album.  TuneUp was able to come up with art work to some bands that are pretty obscure and not widely know, so I was very impressed with this feature.

Clean Up- While the majority of my music collection was ripped from CD’s and had the correct information associated with it, there was a good deal of longs that had been downloaded and had incorrect artist and song names associated with them.  The ‘Clean Up’ feature goes through each song and tries to pick the correct artist name, song title, and album with which the song belongs.  My experience was pretty good over all.  Of course there were some songs that the software couldn’t figure out, but that was about one in every ten or so.  These were usually live tracks that were named badly.  It certainly cut down on the amount of songs that I would have had to go through to organize all of my downloaded music.

Now Playing and Concerts-  This part of the program is actually pretty useful.  While you are listening to music on your computer, TuneUp displays information about the artist that is currently playing.  As you can see in the images it displays YouTube videos, local concerts by the articst (based on your registration location), other artist recommendations, artist news, links to tickets on ebay, and more.  Its a quick way to get updated about all of your favorite bands as you are listening to them play.

Overall, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of TuneUp.  The album art feature worked great as did the song clean up feature.   Once you have run both of them on your music collection, the software is basically useless with the exception of the recommendation and concerts sections that are very useful and will always be updated giving you constant value beyond just improving your music collection.  Is it worth the price?  In the end, that is up to you.  You have nothing to lose by downloading it and taking it for a spin, so give it a try!
